18th Century Highland Music: collections by Patrick McDonald, Malcolm McDonald, and Alexander McGlashan. Please see my blog page for more information about these sheets.
Patrick McDonald's "Collection of Highland Vocal Airs." Published in 1784. This title page a photocopy from the national Library of Scotland.
The dedication page, again in an NLS photocopy. The Highland Society of London was formed in 1778 to promote Highland culture, at a time when it was being very much restricted after Culloden.
The last paragraphs of the 15-page preface (I have only pages 13-15).
The impressive list of subscribers, this the first of 7 pages. Significant names include the English Music Historian Dr Charles Burney, who ordered 3 copies.
I have photographed all the pages I have from this collection. 10 in all. Those in the North Highland Airs section are the ones collected by Joseph McDonald.
3 pages of Perthshire Airs.
3 pages of Argyleshire Airs.
"A Fourth Collection of Strathspey Reels" by Malcolm McDonald, published in 1788. My copy is complete. All music pages shown here.
"A Collection of Reels" by Alexander McGlashan. Published in 1778. My copy is almost complete (lacking 4 pages of music & title page etc.). This title page an NLS photocopy.
I have selected pages from the original at random.
