Photographs from an Album c.1890, Skye and Eigg

The photographs displayed here are all from an album, photographer unknown. Most of the album was filled with photographs depicting villages in the west of England, in Shropshire for example. But 6 pages were devoted to shots of a trip to Skye and Eigg. One or two are by a professional photographer (JV) but most are private photos. At least one, I would have thought, is of some importance, a portrait of schoolchildren on Eigg. On this page I will display all the images, as found in the album.

Some rock climbing, in tin hats.....

.....and climbing this large 'erratic' (a boulder moved by the glaciation process).

A classic shot of Sligachan, the hotel and the bridge backed by the Coulin ridge. Photo by James Valentine.

This was a house that caught their eye. Two more images of it can be seen later.

The bridge at Sligachan.

Marsco, a peak at the east of Glen Sligachan

Another view of Marsco, this time incorporating the hotel and bridge.

Sgurr na Gillean, from Sligachan.

A spot of fishing.

Some bracing skinny-dipping.....

....watched by the locals.

Two more shots of the croft at Sligachan.

Another Valentine photograph, this of Castle Moil and Kyleakin.

Moving on to Eigg

A distant view of An Sgurr.....

....and a close-up of the volcanic peak, so distinctive on the island.

One of the famous carved stones .......                                                   ......and presumably the place where it was situated.

Hard to see what is going on here, but I think a figure can be seen, above what looks like the entrance to a cave. Or is it just a boulder?

A general view of the island.

Perhaps the most interesting photograph from the set, presumably the school on Eigg. No shoes to be seen!
