I have been busy uploading images from my collection. My general interest is in who visited the area of the NW Highlands, and that includes in particular artists who have recorded what they saw. I am aware of very few artworks anywhere that depict the region dating from the 18th century or earlier, and not many even from the 19th century. A reflection, of course of the sparse numbers of travellers to the northern Highlands.
Please have a look at my collection, which includes images from both listed artists and casual visitors. Painting and drawing was expected of educated Victorians, especially women, and I have been impressed by the quality of some of the work. As an example, I have uploaded the Scottish views of Richenda Buxton, some of which were executed at the age of 16. Over the next few weeks I will be posting many more sketches, paintings and photographs, which I hope will be of interest.
The painting shown above is a Highland Scene, by James Ferrier.
