The Immeasurable Wilds: Travellers to the Far North of Scotland.
I am delighted to be able to announce that my book has just been published, and should be available to buy from next week, May 23rd (2022).
It is, I believe, a book that will cover new ground for many people, and with its many illustrations, a book that you will be pleased to own. Something for everyone, I hope: plenty on old maps and mapping, accounts of the very early visitors (Pennant, Pococke, Cordiner, as well as Joihnson), Telford and his roads, tourists from Keats to Royalty, and an account of what the scientists made of this virgin territory, climaxing with the long, Victorian Highlands Controversy.
I will post below a small selection of pages to give you some idea of what the contents looks like.
The book contains 192 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w and with 16 pages of colour plates in the centre. Most of the illustrations are from my collection, many not previously published.
The book is called The Immeasurable Wilds: Travellers to the Far North of Scotland. Published by Whittles Publishing, price £18.99, and available from all good bookshops.
