This week I have struggled to unravel the gradual emergence of the correct mapping of three 'rocks' which lie in the North Atlantic. North Rona had been known about, even on maps, for some time. Two smaller rocks, called Sulisker (now Sula Sgeir) and Sule Skerry, were less well known. Indeed the similarity of their names may have led to some confusion amongst 17th and 18th century cartographers as to exactly what they were mapping.
I have been able to make some sense of the question using maps from my own modest collection. This is not a subject that has received much attention, so far as I can see. I hope it will be of some interest to those of you who find the history of the mapping of Scotland a fascinating subject.
