There are few sights more beautiful than that which greets you as you come over the brow of the hill shortly after passing Ben Arnaboll on the road from Tongue to Durness. Framed by the small peninsula of Ard Neackie in the foreground, the loch stretches southwards towards the hills Cranstackie and Ben Spionnaidh, which in turn are dwarfed by the peaks of Foinavon (Foinne Bhein) and Arkle in the distance. The area was key ground in the Highlands Controversy, the Victorian debate that, once it had been understood, revealed a geology that still attracts geologists from all over the world. The waters of the loch are particularly deep, which has always made it a welcome resort for shipping when conditions are difficult, and it was much frequented by the Navy during World War Two. Once the war was over, German U-Boats were ordered to make for the loch in order to surrender. I have a few private photographs, some of which at least seem to record this surrender taking place at Eriboll, and I shall post a page showing these as soon as possible.
