I have in my collection a letter from General Roy. Not a letter of huge strategic importance - it is in response to a question of wood supplies at military camps at Warley-Common and Coxheath from a Simon Frazer - but I am delighted to possess such a document from a figure of such importance in military history at that time. Major-General William Roy, for all his accomplishments, remains a slightly shadowy figure, with no known portrait of him in existence. I am posting a page on the website showing this letter, and the draft, as well as other items connected to the distinguished man who supervised the "Great Map" of Scotland survey in the early 1750s. It is designed to complement the half-chapter in my book which gives more details of this survey; how it was instigated, and how it was carried out.
All we need now is for my book to be published! Whittles are suggesting that it will be issued in March, and I will keep you posted with any news concerning progress towards that event. I am sorry for the constant delays - as I am sure you can imagine, they depress me as much as anyone, but I am confident that the book will appear shortly, and it is better that it should be issued in a good and accurate state rather than rushed through for the sake of speed. I am glad that Whittles insist on such high standards.
