I have a small number of delightful books that show the interest there was in new lands, and new races at the start of the 19th century. This was a time when new areas, in Africa, America and Australia, for example, were being opened up, and the habits and costumes of the various lands were portrayed in books like La Geographie en Estampes, ou Moeurs et Costumes des differens Peuples de la Terre, which was published in France in 1805. The lovely image at the start of this blog was taken from this book, and I list more from other sources in my new page "Early 19thC Types."
