I made copious notes for my book, The Immeasurable Wilds. Looking back over them, I realise there was much that I found interesting that did not make it into the final text. Over the next few weeks, I hope to cover subjects on which I can elaborate, starting today with a page "Travellers and Maps" in which I look at some of the complaints raised by visitors to the far north in their accounts, regarding the accuracy of their maps. These are details I find particularly exciting: it is one thing to hold in one's hand an old map, and see some of the errors when compared to modern maps, but quite another thing to read of the experiences of people having to struggle over difficult terrain with an inaccurate chart as their guide.
