Travellers to the Highlands in the 18th and 19th centuries had lots to say about the inns they found ready to serve them. Thomas Kirk, writing in 1669, gave due warning that the visitor "must be content to take what you find." The quality of hospitality on offer was very variable, and the further north you went, the less was the choice available. I have expanded on what I recorded on the subject in my book, The Immeasurable Wilds, in a page on this website titled "Highland Inns."
